Ice Box Challenge Glasgow 2021
Win a stay at Woodlands Malvern B&B!
We were delighted to be approached by the International Passive House Association about the Ice Box Challenge in Glasgow in the lead-up to COP26. Held in various cities around the world, this event showcases two boxes, one built to local building standards and the other to the Passivhaus standard, each filled with an identical amount of ice. After two weeks they are opened to see which has the more ice inside. The prize this time for guessing how much is a two-day stay at the Woodlands Malvern oak-frame certified Passivhaus.
The Glasgow Ice Box Challenge started with a student competition to design the two boxes to be used. WIth entries from all over Scotland, this was won by a team of students at Robert Gordon University. The students were helped by Construction Scotland Innovation Centre to build the boxes.

Unsurprisingly, in the ice box challenges in other cities the Passivhaus standard box has always beaten the local building standard one: there is very much more ice left inside. In this video of the Ice Box Challenge Seattle you can see how much ice was left in each box after a fortnight. It’s a great demonstration of the level of insulation and airtightness in a Passivhaus building compared to current building standards.
The Ice Box Challenge Glasgow is also a fitting prelude to the November COP26 conference. One of the ways we can reduce global heating is by making our buildings much more energy efficient - and they are also much more pleasant to be in!
